Information for Rock Climbing Courses and Private Guiding year round meeting place.

Getting to Hidden Valley Picnic Area:

PLEASE ALLOW AT LEAST 3 HOURS WHEN COMING FROM LOS ANGELES OR SAN DIEGO.
Print and use the directions below in conjunction with a California map.

GPS devices are unreliable in Joshua Tree National Park.

Cell phones do not work in Joshua Tree National Park.

  • From the Los Angeles area access I-10 East to Route 62 North. This exit is marked for Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree National Park (Hwy. 62 exit is often missed as it is only 5 miles past the highway 111 exit which leads to Palm Springs). Continue on Route 62 North for approximately 28 miles through Morongo and Yucca Valley's to the town of Joshua Tree. Make a right turn (south) onto Park Blvd. Continue on this road approx. 5 miles to the West Entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. The meeting place, Hidden Valley Picnic Area is approx. 9.5 miles from the parks West entrance. After driving 9 miles into the park you will see a sign that reads "Hidden Valley Picnic Area". Make a right turn here and continue 1/2 mile on paved loop road around (counter clockwise) and 100 yards past first out houses to Hidden Valley Picnic Area (Turtle Rock, tall rock that stands nearly alone). Refer to enclosed map.

  • From South Bay/Orange County take the 91 Fwy. East to Route 60 East. Route 60 will merge with I-10 East, follow the above directions for the remainder of the trip.

  • From the San Diego area take I-15 North to Hwy 215 to Route 60 East. Route 60 will merge with I-10 East, follow the above directions (from the Los Angeles area) for the remainder of the trip.

  • From Palm Springs it depends on how you leave Palm Springs. If you take Hwy 111 back to I-10, then drive east towards Indio until you come to Route 62 North. If you take Indian Ave north to I-10, then you will drive west on I-10 until you come to Route 62 North. Once you exit on Route 62 north follow the above directions (from the Los Angeles area) for the remainder of the trip.

  • From Twentynine Palms take Hwy. 62 West to the town of Joshua Tree and make left (south) on Park Blvd. Follow remaining directions from the Los Angeles area to meeting place.

Meeting Time: All Rock Climbing Courses and Weekend Private Guiding meet at 8:00 a.m. - Please be prompt! All Weekday Private Guiding meets at 8:30 a.m.- Please be prompt!

Meeting Place: Hidden Valley Picnic Area (Turtle Rock).

What to Wear: TEMPERATURES CAN VARY GREATLY, It's a great idea to bring layers of clothing so you are comfortable throughout the day. During "cooler months" it is important to have long pants, a long-sleeved shirt or sweatshirt and a jacket (preferably a wind shell). Bring along a hat and gloves to stay warm when not rock climbing. Pants should be loose and allow freedom of movement; sweatpants work well. Often shorts and t-shirt may be worn during the day but you must be prepared for cooler weather.Much of Joshua Tree National Park is a High Desert (4,000 plus feet in elevation).

What to Bring: Lunch, snacks, water (3-4 quarts minimum per day!), walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, jacket, windbreaker, hat and camera (optional). There is no water in the park so be sure to bring enough with you. Please be prepared with layers of clothing.

Park Entrance Fee: $20.00 per car and good for seven days or you may purchase an Annual Pass for $30.00 which provides unlimited use of Joshua Tree National Park for one year from date of purchase. If you plan to visit a number of National Parks this year, there is also a Natoinal Parks pass available for $80.00.

Camping Information: Most camping is $20 per night in the Joshua Tree National Park and is first come first serve. You may reserve a site in Indian Cove or Black Rock Campgrounds ($20 per night). Also Group Sites are available. Please call (800) 365-2267 for reservations. You provide your own camping gear - warm sleeping bag, tent, ground cover,sleeping pad, food, water ,stove, pots, pans, kitchen utensils, etc. There is no water available in the park so be sure to bring enough for cooking and drinking (at least 2 gallons per day). It is generally cold overnight (15-40 degrees in the months of December, January and February).

Meeting Place: Billboard Buttress bulletin board located in Indian Cove Campground. After entering Joshua Tree National Park (free day use) continue about 2 miles. Once you come to a "Y" in the road look for parking lot and bulletin board on your left. This is were we meet.
